Create your first management scenario

Now that you know how the Forest Studio app works, you will create your own management scenario using the BAU as a baseline, run a simulation with it, and review the results.

1 Use default management scenario as baseline

  1. Go to the Management Scenario tab.

  2. Zoom out using Ctrl + - (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + - (Mac).

  3. Collapse the navigation sidebar by pressing (arrow at the top-right of the sidebar).

In the left-side Management Scenario window, inside the Choose Management Scenario section:

  1. Click on Copy Default

  2. Replace the New Scenario from Default box with a short, specific name for your scenario. (That text is just the default—overwrite it.)

  3. Replace the description in the Scenario based on default management data box with a one-sentence aim (what you’re trying to test/change) plus any key tweaks.

    Important

You can’t edit the description after creating a scenario. Keep it broad so it still fits as you try different edits.

  4. Press Create from Default

  5. Select your new management scenario from the dropdown list in the Choose Management Scenario section.

  6. Collapse the Choose Management Scenario section by pressing the arrow at the left of the title. This allows you to see the other sections better.

2 Edit the default management scenario

  1. Go to Filters & Bulk Actions. Click Show Filters .

    • Filter MUs by Groups, MU IDs, or Dominant Species.
    • To reuse a set, click + Create Custom Group, select MUs, and save.
  2. Collapse the Filters & Bulk Actions section clicking the arrow to see the tables clearly.

  3. Confirm the filter is active: look for the yellow filter bar showing the current selection.

  4. Choose which table to work on: MU, Species, or Clear Cut (tabs).

    • Your filters limit which rows appear and which rows you will be able to edit.
    • Your active filter carries across tabs, so only the filtered MUs are shown/edited even if you switch tables.
  5. Edit the filtered rows:

    • For precise, per-row changes edit each value directly in the table.

      • Changes apply only to the cells you edit manually, not to all filtered rows.
    • For fast, consistent batch changes, click Bulk Edit Tables → Edit Tables for Filtered MUs.

      • Pick the table type (MU / Species / Clear Cut).
      • Fill only the fields you want to change; leave others empty to keep their current (default) values.
      • Click Apply Values to All. Use Cancel Bulk Editing to exit.
      • Changes apply to all filtered rows.
  6. Review the table: filtered rows should reflect your edits. Adjust filters or repeat bulk edit if needed.

  7. After reviewing the edits click on Save Changes to save the updated table.

  8. To work on a different subset:

    • Click on Clear All Filters
    • Reopen the Filters & Bulk Actions section with the arrow left to the title.
    • Set a new filter, and
    • Repeat steps 11–14.

3 Run simulation and inspect

  1. To run a new simulation follow the steps in Create a simulation

    • Make sure you select your new management scenario for the simulation (step 3)
  2. To review yearly forest metrics for your new management strategy, follow the steps on

    • This time, select your new simulation, with the management scenario you just created (step 3)
