Overview of the Forest Studio Edu App

The Forest Studio app lets you run and analyze forest dynamics simulations using the Forest Studio model.

Run pages

This 4 pages allow you to decide on the

Dashboard

This is the home page of the app, in which you have quick links to:

  • Management scenarios you created
  • Previous or running simulations
  • Yearly forest metrics (finished runs)
  • Profitability overview (finished runs)
  • Yearly datasets (finished runs)

At the end of the page, you can see a Species Distribution plot for management units grouped by dominant species. This represents the initial state of the forest, before the simulations start.

Management Scenario

Here you configure or review forest management strategies:

  • Map of Management Units (MUs) with dominant species coloring
  • Summary of MU composition (BA, Trees/ha, forest type, dominant species, …)
  • Review existing management scenarios
  • Create new management scenarios

Run Simulation

Start a new simulation:

  • Choose a name
  • Select number of years
  • Pick a management scenario
  • Enable/disable management
  • Check simulation status

Simulations

See all simulations — running and completed.

Analysis Tabs

Forest Dynamics

Explore how processes evolve across years:

  • Curves for Basal Area (m²/ha) and Trees per Hectare
  • Plot at MU or Landscape level
  • Optional bars for Growth, Mortality, Regeneration, Thinning, or Clearcut
  • Choose whether to represent BA (m²/ha) or Trees/ha with the bars

Economic Analysis

Understand the economic impact of management:

  • Curves for Net Revenue (CHF/ha), Volume (m³/ha), Cost (CHF/m³) and Price (CHF/m³)
  • Plot at MU or Landscape level
  • One curve per species (multi-select)

Forest Snapshot Viewer

See forest status by the end of a selected year.

  • Visualize map of forest snapshot data for specific loaded year

Table Viewer

Inspect/export detailed simulation data. Each row is one tree, including information on (among others):

  • Management Unit (mu_id)
  • Hexagon location
  • Species
  • Diameter (cm)
Tip

Locate these tabs and predict what each view helps answer before running any simulation.
